Spring is finally here and for this new Focus On , we decided to introduce you with Belgian Sierra Sam´s who ´s been active in the techno industry for quite a while .
Hello Sierra Sam. Can we say that ‘Ultimate Gangsta’ is a tribute to the 90′ house scene from Detroit?
Hello! I am not sure it is a tribute to anything. I don´t really make tributes to anything, I just make the music I like and I feel, of course it has Detroit influences as well as Chicago, Berlin…but I wouldn´t talk about tribute. I used analogue gear for that track and it was more a tribute to the ‘Acidlab Miami’ and the ‘Sequential Circuits Drumtraks’ which I used for the groove. I found the vocal sample on an old DVD and used the DX for bassline.
Where is your favorite city?
Berlin, London, New York. I really enjoy Berlin, I live here and I found a nice balance between work, creativity and friends. I always loved London for a lot of reasons: it’s a beautiful city, it has a lot to offer on a cultural level, it’s always exciting. I went a few times to NYC and I really like that side of the US, for obvious reasons. I also like shopping, so those cities are incredible!
Can you define your lifestyle? I mean, what is a typical Sierra Sam week about?
My weeks are divided between work at the Souvenir office, studio time, playing at the week end and enjoying Berlin with my friends and my partner. I really like to go out when I don´t play, check new music, go for food, cook, etc. I have a normal life, a lot of music involved, a lot of geeking on synthesizers!
Tell us the most exciting gig you ever did…
The most exciting gig? I would say: every gig is different. I like to play in Mexico a lot, it’s not only for the clubs (they have amazing parties at ‘Bar Americas’ for instance where I always have a great time) but every time I am in Mexico I enjoy the people, the friends and the food. I think it is always a great time of the year when I have the chance to play that country!

Welcome to the fourth edition of our “In The City: Focus on” series. This time round we would like to introduce Erfurt’s techno kid Kenny Leaven, who has had a few releases with us. He is also known as the organizer of “Bayou Beach Festival” which is held during the summer time at the ‘Nordstrand’ place in his home town.
The discovery of Kenny was a few years back. We got impressed by his DJ skills and musical knowledge with such a lovely personality you could ever imagine. Ever since he has been with us and we are offering you the chance to get some of his tunes for free here.
Hi Kenny, first, tell us what the meaning of ‘Im Himmel Gibts Kirschen’ is?
‘Kirschen im Himmel’ is my twin brother’s and me favourite pie from our mom. It’s a delicious chocolate pie with cherry topping. I´m a German guy with an English artist name and I think it´s funny to mix the languages!
What’s your favourite city that you have visited?
For me, Sydney is the most exciting city I’ve ever been to. I think the city’s aura is magical and there’s a very special light which I’ve never seen before and again.
You run the Bayou Festival in Erfurt. Tell us a little bit more about it…
Yes, it’s my baby! Bayou Festival at the ‘Nordstrand’ place in Erfurt is an affair of the heart. It’s a Sunday event at the daytime and we run it since 2009 once a year together with my team. In 2012 also a new project started: the ‘Bayou Beach Club’. Same place, same lake around and I run it together with my partner Micha Sadlon. It looks like a smaller version of the mainly festival but with a sandy beach, a summer season gastronomy, water skiing and wakeboarding, small concerts and of course Sunday parties at the daytime!
What’s your favorite place ‘In The City’ – I mean, Erfurt?
The ‘Nordstrand’ place is so lovely and my favourite place in Erfurt. The lake and the pure nature are only 5 minutes far away from the middle of Erfurt City. I can re-fill my batteries there and for me it is a good calm anchor in contrast to the party business!

As our podcast series continues, we welcome Montreal-based artist, Maher Daniel to the third edition of In The City: Artist Focus. Maher Daniel is a name that many people have had on the tip of their tongues for the last couple of years. With releases on some of the biggest labels in the industry, things show no sign of slowing down for Mr. Daniel In the near future. Maher keeps pushing boundaries, developing the signature sound he is known for. There is no stopping as he continues to push forward along side some of the very best in the industry. In the pack, you can enjoy three free downloads from Maher, along with his latest recorded mix.
What is your favorite place in your city?
Montreal is filled so many amazing places I can’t pick just one but the old port is brilliant in the summer time to take in all the old historic architecture. But if I was to pick one place which is my happy place in Montreal is Big in Japan Bar. This little gem is probably the coolest place in montreal hands down. When you walk in there you feel like you are in a different world all together with the design and minimal decor.
Tell us a little behind the scene story about your featuring with Rychard..
Rychard aka Richie G is a young rising talent in Montreal amongst many others in montreal. This record was done quite some time ago. But when rich brought forth the idea I really fell in love with it. And we just took it the next level. And I’m really happy that it is part of this package as it fits perfectly with the rest of the talent !!!
Favorite city you’ve visited?
Hard Hard hard.. But I would have to say Barcelona or Berlin each unique in there own ways but absolutely brilliant cities which I love and adore. And I’m really excited for the move to barcelona this summer..
What’s your typical ‘In The City”s food on tour?
On tour what ever the host or promoter suggests. You can never go wrong with IZAKAYA probably one of my favourite things out there. Along with plenty of Cold Sake..

Can you define your lifestyle? I mean, what is a typical Chris Wood & Meat week about?
Our lifestyle is “Music”! We run the Record Store Freebase Records in Frankfurt during the week and we play at the weekend, we organize parties and try to keep our area alive (what is not that easy). If we are not into music we are into football both for different clubs what is the most dangerous aspect in our friendship. If you want to be part of our life you have to come to our store or join us at the club for a dance or partyyyy :)…..
Can you tell us about your city?
Frankfurt is a big city during the day, and a small city during the night. But thats why people in Frankfurt and Offenbach work a lot together, cause everybody knows each other. Frankfurt is not so impersonal like other big cities and you can not get lost so fast :) But in fact it is hard to keep the spirit alive. More and more people leaving our hood.
Favorite city you’ve visited?
Chris Wood: We both love London. But after this year Thaibreak, we love more and more the asian culture. We had such a great time in Bangkok….even if you can get lost very easily. If you’ll see a person without hairs and glasses looking for his hotel in Bangkok please help him, it’s probably MEAT!!
Meat: In my case i feel home very quick if i have the right people around me. So all about, we feel comfortable in most of the cities we’ve been so far.
What is the funniest thing ever happened while touring?
Chris Wood: For me one funny thing was, when a fucked up girl came to me in the club and tried to order a gin tonic at the dj booth. She was getting really angry, when she realized, that i will not make her a drink. Finally the doorkeeper came and showed her the way out :) I guess there is not enough time and space to tell you more funny stories which happened during our long long career ….hehehe!

More important than the parties, the plane rides, the magazine covers or the money, every great DJ is first and foremost, a collector. A discoverer of music. A traveller weaving through a sea of new sounds and honing down the multitude of records to those that matter most. It’s this drive for sonic exploration that’s responsible for Souvenir, the Berlin label spearheaded by Tiefschwarz and their french partner Arthur Vélasquez. In little over a year the label has...
